Fried chicken, tortillas, greasy homemade burgers, fast food, tex-mex...  These are just a few of the foods that have caused me to lose control of my weight over the years.  A lack of consistent exercise hasn't made things any easier.  However, I just started a new position that offers a free gym membership.  To my surprise, I found myself on the treadmill twice in the last couple of weeks trying to get acclimated to working out again and trying to jump start my health.

I love to walk and that is always a great way to get active for me.  I mentioned that I have been on the treadmill a couple of times at work, but what about weekends?  What could I do to keep from driving all the way to work on the weekends?  I also needed a backup plan for those days when the treadmill before or after work hours or during lunch wouldn't be a possibility.

Well, I got in my car last week, set the trip odometer in the car, and drove a one mile trail through my neighborhood.   I was a little nervous about committing to the walk  so I asked my wife to join me.  It wasn't a good day for her, so I forced myself to take the first steps.  Believe it or not, I walked the one mile trek through the neighborhood twice all by myself.  It felt good to be disciplining my body and seeing some progress.  This walk took place on Saturday, May 25, 2013 and can be considered as my official 'Day 1' of this journey.

Day 2
I was up early because I wanted to be on time for church and still get my walk in.  I walked that one mile trail through the neighborhood twice at a brisk pace and am determined to walk 2 miles a day in my neighborhood or on the treadmill and get myself into shape.  The walk was good.  Church was good.  It was a great day all around.  Another step forward...

Day 3
Today, I walked the two miles and my son walked with me.  I just want to be consistent and not initiate the yo-yo workout cycle that I've been guilty of over the years.  So, I am praying about my health.  I am inviting my family into the process and just believing in the success of this new start.  Things will be different.  I also signed up for this blog and have started to catalog the adventure.  This is a great way to remember the struggle and celebrate the hurdles that will be overcome.  It is also a way to encourage others that seem to be stuck in neutral when it comes to taking your personal physical health more seriously.  If I can make progress, so can you.  Did you drive a mile in your neighborhood and chart out a course?  Did you start with a quarter mile?  a half mile?  Just start with something.  That is the point!  Until tomorrow...
